Using The DermTech Connect App to Submit Photos

How many moles can I submit in one case?
You can select one mole to be evaluated per telehealth doctor consult. You should select the mole that you’re most concerned about. If you have photographed multiple moles, you can choose which mole is most important to you by selecting the ‘mole of interest’ in the photos that you took in the DermTech Connect app. You’ll see a bright green circle around the mole that you tapped in the app.

I don’t see a doctor in my area to review my image, but they’re in my state—is that okay?
Yes, the telehealth doctor located in your state can evaluate your photos even if they are not local to you.

What happens once I submit my photos to a selected telehealth doctor through the DermTech Connect app?
First, a telehealth doctor that you selected from the list of providers available in the state where you are located will visually analyze the photos you submit of your mole. If your telehealth doctor determines the mole is suspicious of melanoma, they will make a recommendation, which may include having the mole tested with the DermTech Melanoma Test, or recommend an in-office appointment for further evaluation, so you may need to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist near you. If the photos you submit are clear and not blurry, they will be reviewed by a telehealth doctor who will evaluate them along with the information you provided, and then send their evaluation (“tele-consult report”) to you within 48 hours or less from the time of receiving your image.

About the DermTech Melanoma Test

What is the DermTech Melanoma Test and how does it work?
The DermTech Melanoma Test is a non-invasive genomic test used to enhance the early detection of melanoma through the use of a Smart Sticker which lifts skin cells from the surface of the skin. The Smart Stickers are included in the Adhesive Skin Collection Kit. The adhesive not only lifts the genomic material, but stores and preserves it so it can be sent to DermTech’s Gene Lab for examination. For more information, please click HERE.

If your doctor has identified a suspicious skin spot — maybe one they would normally take a photograph of and track — they can use the DermTech Melanoma test to identify the presence of genomic markers found in melanoma. If the genomic markers are there, this will typically result in a biopsy of the spot. If not, you’ve likely saved yourself a scar.

Does the DermTech Melanoma Test replace a surgical biopsy?
The DermTech Melanoma Test is not a replacement for a biopsy. If the genomic markers are there, your doctor will use this information to choose the best path forward for your treatment. This will likely result in removal of the mole. The DermTech Melanoma Test is rather a step before a biopsy that can see indicators of the disease far earlier than the traditional biopsy pathway can.

If my telehealth doctor recommends a DermTech Melanoma Test for me, how do I get this test and what happens next?
If your telehealth doctor recommends this test for you, you’ll need to give your consent to have DermTech ship the Adhesive Skin Collection Kit to the address you provided in the DermTech Connect app. The kit includes Smart Stickers for the collection of skin cells from the selected mole that are tested for selected RNA and DNA in the laboratory. The test results provided to your telehealth doctor who will review the results with you.

How quickly will I receive my DermTech Melanoma Test once I consent to the test?
Typically, it takes around 1-2 business days once DermTech receives your consent, but sometimes it can take longer. There are factors beyond our control that influence how quickly you’ll receive the Adhesive Skin Collection Kit.

Can I refuse the DermTech Melanoma Test if I don’t want to take it?
Yes. If for any reason you decide to not take the DermTech Melanoma Test after your telehealth doctor has recommended the test, you can opt to not take the test. All patients must consent to the test in order to have the Adhesive Skin Collection Kit shipped to you. If you decide to opt out, it is recommended that you see a dermatologist.

Why do I need to schedule a Remote Test Supervision Session with DermTech’s Lab Collection Test Supervisor?
The Lab Collection Test Supervisor is needed to help you properly collect the skin sample using the Adhesive Skin Collection Kit.

How quickly do I need to send my skin specimen to the DermTech Gene Lab?
You’ll need to send us your skin specimen as soon as possible once it is collected, or within 72hrs from collection.

The DermTech Melanoma Test Results

How long does it take to receive my DermTech Melanoma Test results?
Results are available to your telehealth doctor typically in 3-5 business days from when your specimen is received by the DermTech Gene Lab. The telehealth doctor will notify you of the results.

How will the doctor communicate with me about my DermTech Melanoma Test results?
If you have a positive result, your telehealth doctor will contact you by phone to discuss the result and recommended next steps. If your test outcome is negative, your telehealth doctor might call you or will notify you. You’ll also receive notifications in the DermTech Connect app.

What happens after I receive my DermTech Melanoma Test results?
Depending on your result, your telehealth doctor may recommend that you see a dermatologist near you. Your Patient Advocate will contact you to help assist you with scheduling follow-up care. If you still have questions, please consult your physician.

What does it mean to have a positive or negative test result?
A negative test result means that the DermTech Melanoma Test did not find genomic changes it looked for associated with melanoma. A negative result indicates a greater than 99% likelihood the mole is not melanoma. If your DermTech Melanoma Test result is positive, then the test has detected one or more of the genomic changes it looked for that are associated with melanoma.
However, if you do receive a positive result, your telehealth doctor may recommend that you see a dermatologist near you. To locate a dermatologist who is closest to you, you can:
1) ask your Patient Advocate to help you locate a doctor in your area for an in-office visit, or
2) use our Find a Doctor tool on our website.
